I've been to Iong Kee at least six times and it was a progressively worse experience each visit. There are two glaring issues with this restaurant. One is that the quality of the food does not match up with the price, you'll get food just above fast food quality for restaurant prices. Most times I visited, I ordered the Orange Peel Chicken and I routinely find that about a third of the chicken is overcooked and too chewy to properly consume. The rice is also poorly seasoned and often clumped up and dry. It more or less became a lottery each bite if the particular piece of chicken on my fork was actually going to go down my esophagus or not.

The real issue here, though, is the service. Every single time I've gone there it's been the same hostess, an older Asian woman, and she's always been the only person serving tables and taking orders. The service she provides is always terrible and she always seems to have an attitude that implies she doesn't want you there. You might think it's because she's working alone in a restaurant, but almost every visit my table was the only one she had to serve.

I finally decided to stop giving this place a chance a few days ago when I visited and there was one other family sitting in another booth. We ordered our meal and our customary small bowl of soup arrived, followed shortly after by rice that was poorly cooked and looked like it had been scraped out of tupperware - it tasted no more fresh than it looked. During this time a few other families arrived and there were four parties present. She proceeded to take their orders, then about ten minutes after delivering our rice, she delivered two plates of food, though we'd ordered three. We expected she was going to go get the third, but she simply occupied herself setting tables and bringing soup and tea out for the other parties, but ultimately about five minutes later the third plate arrived.

We ate and requested boxes and the check, but neither arrived... ever. About 80 minutes after sitting down, we finally got fed up and demanded the check, though had to wait because she was on the phone taking an order. Then, we had to go get the boxes from her station ourselves because she literally never took the time to assist us. Keep in mind that she wasn't just busy - she was incompetent. Another party came in after us, was served, paid, and left long before she gave us our check, and we did ask for it before they paid and left. When we paid, we did so with a debit card, but we decided that we wouldn't tip because we were frustrated with the poor service. She returned to us and actually demanded that we add a tip to the payment, but we refused, so she threw a verbal fit and threw the check and card on the table for us to sign. We departed after paying, but I came back to grab a pair of glasses left on the table to find her bussing our table (glad I got there before she noticed the glasses under a napkin) and she was yelling about it to other customers, claiming her service was good because she delivered us water refills four times (which isn't entirely true.)

In the end, I can accept incompetence from an employee, I can accept bad service, I can accept bad quality food. I can chalk all these up to her culture, to a bad day, to the restaurant's quality. But for her to throw a fit and demand a tip, then get angry when we refused (and mind you, we did so politely - no voices raised, no insults used) was what convinced me to never come back.

That's not how you run a business, not how you treat customers, and a simple soft-spoken apology would've salvaged our patronage.

Tried to make an order to go. The woman abruptly said "not right now, we're closed between 3 and 5". RUDE. And a really DUMB way to run a business. I hope no one ever eats there.
